Steve Carlson is a NASCAR Whelen All-American Series and ASA Midwest Tour driver from West Allis, WI. Without a doubt, Carlson is widely regarded as one of the best Midwestern asphalt racers of all-time, a fact strengthened by nine championships in the defunct ARTGO/NASCAR Midwest Series (the sanctioning bodies changed in 1998, but series records count both ARTGO and NASCAR statistics) and the National Championship in the Whelen All-American Series in 2007.
Career Overview
For most of his professional career, Carlson has driven a car with the #66. He won his first major race on August 18, 1976, taking a Hobby Stock feature at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway<ref name="LaCrosse Speedway History">http://www.lacrossespeedway.com/history</ref>. LaCrosse has been his home track throughout his career, and Carlson won titles there in various forms of competition during the 1978, 1979, 1982, 1984, 2007, and 2008 seasons<ref name ="LaCrosse Speedway History" />
In the Midwest Series, Carlson won 67 times, a record that fell just one short of legendary Dick Trickle's. But his consistency is awe-striking. For a period of sixteen years (1990-2005), Carlson never finished outside of the top-two in points, recording nine series titles and seven runner-up finishes.
Currently, Carlson has moved onto the ASA Midwest Tour, the successor of the defunct NASCAR/ARTGO tour. In the three years of competition, Carlson has won seven times and finished 1st in the 2009 final standings, his first full-time season on the tour.
