The Third Turn provides a free, public repository of racing history. From an intellectual property perspective, records of sporting events outcomes are difficult to "own". We do not claim any form of ownership over the material we present here - we do ask to be sourced and linked where appopriate, and our site to not be scraped.

To that end, we also have used many sources in building this database. We do not verbatim simply "copy and paste" material from any other website, but may factor posted results/news on other sites or sources into the material we assemble. In other words, we build our archives out from as many sources as available - often using one source to fill in the gaps of another.

We would like to publicly acknowledge the most prolific sources and honor their work, even as we try to build upon it in a newer, more comprehensive way.

Libraries

Many of our scans and sources have been provided to us through materials hosted at a number of specialty libraries throughout the United States. These libraries have been incredibly gracious in helping assist or giving access to our researchers.

If you have any material that you think would assist these libraries, we would greatly encourage you. You may also contact us if you wish to donate material to The Third Turn. Once ingested, we will donate these to one of the libraries on your behalf.

Trade Papers

The libraries above store complete archives of many trade papers, the volume of which are frankly innumerable to list here. However, we do want to recognize and respect the contribution of the editors and contributors to these papers. Most often results were carefully called or written into offices by "at track" staff - tedious hours that today are paying off with their work saved electronically.

Papers we use most often:

  • National Speed Sport News
  • Speedway Scene
  • Hawkeye Racing News
  • Midwest Racing News
  • Sprint Car
  • Racing News (aka as Southern Moto Racing)
  • Area Auto Racing News
  • Racing Wheels

ARRA

Our site historians are part of the Auto Racing Resarch Associates (AARA), a network of historians who either have done their own interesting research projects or will do specific projects upon request. We want to publicly thank this network for their assistance.

Timing and Scoring

We often take results directly from the timing providers. A long list of sources we montior are available here

Other Researchers and Sites

Here are other sites we have worked with and cross-referenced our own research with as we built up our database. Before we mention them, we should call out the Wayback Machine, a site who allows us to crawl significant amounts of old websites to find data.
