Mike Groff fractured his lower left tibia in practice and was replaced by Johnny Unser. Scott Harrington, Billy Roe, Stephan Gregoire, Lyn St. James all withdrew prior to the start of practice Fermin Velez got ill and pulled off Billy Boat originally won the race but due to a scoring error, Arie Luyendyk was given the win, this incident was the last time USAC officiated a series race.
